How To Support The Black Lives Matter Movement

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Wondering how you can help? Well we have devised a list of ways you can get involved and provoke positive change.

Donate

Following the murder of George Floyd and the protests occurring across the world, numerous fundraising pages have been set up to support the families who have lost loved ones and to bail out protestors who have been arrested and support the wider Black Lives Matter movement. You can look for Go Fund Me pages or other crowd funded accounts set up on behalf of victims to help with unexpected costs such as funerals and legal fees. However, it is important when you go to donate you verify they are legitimate.

There is also a range of places you can donate to in order to support the cause:

Contact Government Officials

Hold Government officials and your local MP to account. You can do this by writing directly to your local MP asking them what they are doing to change policies and laws to reflect that Black Lives Matter. When writing your letter or email do be sure to include your address and full name, this is so they can ensure that you are one of their constituents.

You can find your Local MP by clicking here.

Spread The Word

Online campaigns have been particularly successful and showing support and raising awareness amongst your friends and followers on social media is a great way to spread the word. Post important links for people to see and share anything that you have found particularly helpful.

Another way you can spread the word is through talking to family and friends directly and opening up a conversation about the issues. If you are a parent you could also consider ways that you can educate your children. There is a range of children's books that talk about race and diversity which are good tools to use.

Sign Petitions

There are a number of petitions currently circulating you can easily add your name to. Petitions can take as little as a few minutes to sign but can have a lasting impact.

You can find a list of helpful petitions to sign by heading over to https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co and clicking on 'sign petitions' on the home page.

Educational Reading

One of the most important things you can do right now, especially if you are a White person is to get clued up and learn about the issues effecting Black communities.

You can find a variety of links that provide useful information, to help those wishing to expand their knowledge surrounding the issues, by clicking here and looking under the 'educational reading' section or clicking here to see a range of book suggestions.

The recent murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others have drawn global attention to the deadly affects of racism. The Black Lives Matter movement demands for justice, reform and race equality, calling upon people to take direct action in honour of the lives lost worldwide.

Here at Croydon FM we too stand in solidarity using our platform as a tool in the fight against racial injustice and inequality.
