Fear amongst fans begin to arise as rumours circulate that this years Love Island may be cancelled
Many have been waiting keenly for the return of the reality series although it seems that many television shows including Love Island are under threat due to the coronavirus outbreak and social distancing measures making filming nearly impossible. On top of this it seems the show is struggling to obtain adequate insurance for this season to commence.
A source claimed that 'producers are looking at ways of making it work' but their current plan to have contestants fly out to Majorca and isolate 2 weeks prior to the start of filming doesn't seem convincing enough for insurance companies to provide the necessary cover.
ITV boss Kevin Lygo issued a warning, stating that the upcoming summer series may not go ahead due to the show potentially sending the wrong message out to the public regarding the practice of social distancing i.e. staying 2 metres apart. He also stated 'What signal might it be sending out if we're doing a show where everyone is crammed together slavering over each other, and the rest of the world is told not to go near anyone in the park?'
Lygo went on to shut down rumours insinuating that the show would be filmed in Cornwall despite ITV looking into the possibility as the show 'wouldn't be the same.'
Despite fears of cancelation it was revealed last week that applications for the show hit a record high with more than 12,000 people signing up in attempts to bag their spot in the villa.
ITV are said to have drafted in extra staff to help interview candidates which will occur over online calls via Zoom. This will then create a shortlist - potential candidates will then be required to attend a face to face interview even though the series is at risk of not happening.
Luckily, fans already had their annual dose of Love island with the first ever winter series aired in January of this year, seeing Paige Turley and Finn Tapp taking the crown.
The pair still seem to be loved up and revealed plans to move in together once lockdown measures are lifted.
