Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Legendary hip-hop photographer Chi Modu has sadly passed away at age 54.

Yesterday the family of acclaimed hip-hop photographer Chi Modu announced the devastating news via social media that the 54 year old has passed away. Details surrounding has death have not been released and understandably the family have requested "privacy at this time."

Throughout his career Modu photographed a number of hip-hop superstars including the likes of Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg and countless others. He is behind the most iconic photos of rappers throughout the 90's and early 2000's and below we have included some of our favourites.

Born in Nigeria and raised in New Jersey, Chi discovered his passion for photography when studying economics at 'Rutgers University.' He then went on to study photojournalism at 'The International Center of Photography' in New York before becoming Director of photography at 'The Source' where he shot over 30 covers, including the iconic photo of Biggie in front of the World Trade Centre (above.)

Although Modu is probably best known for his work surrounding hip-hop, his impact extends far and way, influencing and inspiring the greater worlds of photography and pop culture.

Gone, But Never Forgotten. Rest In Peace Chi Modu.

Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones during this trying and difficult time.
